Great photos are a key component to a well designed hotel website and a professional photo shoot will truly transform your bookings. Updating your photography is an investment in your business.

The tips below will help you get the most out of your next photo shoot.

Give the photographer as much information as possible

If you’re clear about your needs and expectations this will ensure you get the most out of your photo shoot.

Purpose of the images

Let the photographer know what the photos are for and what orientation they should be.

EXAMPLE

Usage: web design or print

Orientation: landscape (horizontal) or portrait (vertical)

Provide a shot list

Compile a simple shot list outlining all the images you need. This will help both you and the photographer prepare for the day.  You may want wide angle shots of rooms, detail shots of breakfast, exterior shots at dusk and so on.

Props

Props can make or break a shot. It’s important to put some thought into what props you’ll use for the shoot.  What helps you convey the image of your brand? You may choose a stylish vase and flowers, magazines, coffee and croissant. Don’t over do it but use subtle touches here and there. Again, run these ideas by your photographer.

Consider A Stylist

If you have the budget, employing a stylist for the shoot is a worthwhile investment.   A great stylist will take your photo shoot to the next level by ensuring the essence of your brand is conveyed in the photography. Ask your photographer for recommendations.

Inspiration

Explore the internet and put together a collection of images that illustrate the look and feel you’re after. Share these with your photographer and explain why you like the shots.

The Vibe

Let the photographer know what message you want to communicate with these images? 

  • Luxury and style
  • Family fun
  • Hipster heaven

and so on.

Who are your customers?

Share with the photographer as much information as you can about your customers such as age, income, where they live and so on.

Ask the photographer for preparation recommendations.

I’ve set out some basic recommendations below however your photographer will also have some invaluable preparation best practices.

Don’t forget the weather

It’s essential to shoot on a sunny day – blue skies are far more effective at selling your property than grey ones. Ask your photographer for a bad weather rescheduling plan. Keep track of the weather in the lead up to the shoot and re-schedule if necessary.

Preparing the hotel for the shoot

Some of this may seem common sense however it’s important this checklist is co-ordinated with your team prior to the shoot so everyone is prepared.

Rooms

  • De-clutter the rooms
  • Use plump pillows (starching pillow cases gives them an extra crisp look)
  • Ensure all bed linen is pressed and wrinkle free

PROPS

Prepare flowers, magazines, coffee, food etc so they are ready on the morning of the shoot.

CLEANING

Aside from your regular cleaning we recommend you:

  • Clean windows
  • Polish metal

Gardens

  • Mow lawns the day before
  • Garden manicured where applicable
  • Paths swept
